Grasstrees for Sale...

Grasstrees are a quintessential example of an Australian native plant. They grow naturally right across Australia's diverse landscapes.

Grasstrees come in a wide variety of species with different sizes and colours. The species that are local to your area will be most likely to thrive in your garden.

The Latifolia Grasstree (Xanthorrhoea latifolia subsp latifolia) are noted for their dark green leaves. The leaves grow to approximately 1 metre long. These grasstrees are particularly vigorous growing once established.

Grasstrees are a perfect feature tree in your garden. It is recommended that you allow at least a 2 to 3 meter diameter area when planting. The Grasstree must have good drainage and be well watered for the first few months after planting. They respond well to a small amount of Seasol solution in the growing months of September to March. A position in your garden with at least half day to full sun is a must for a successful long life.

Grasstrees for Revegetation...

Grasstree seedlings are a smart choice to plant for revegetation.

The grasstree would make great understorey plants creating another layer to trees, shrubs and groundcovers etc while contributing to maximising ecological benefits of revegetation to include all layers.

Why Grasstrees? Grasstrees in bushlands and reserves are at risk to land clearing.

Why Grasstree Seedlings? Transplanting of harvested grasstree plants from bushlands is difficult and replanting has a high failure rate. Grasstree seedlings can be mass planted either in plugs or biodegradable tube stock minimising cost and transplant shock and maximising successful establishment.

Grasstrees...the basics.

The Greek word Xanthos means yellow and rheo means flow. The genus is named xanthorrhoea due to the yellowish resin which flows (exudes) from the trunk of some of the species. Some aborigines call the plant Balga which means black boy. The common name for xanthorrhoea or Balga is grasstree.

Ashview Acres sells and propagates from authorised seeds Xanthorrhoea latifolia subsp latifolia. This is a small business with focus on quality plants and customer service. We believe the grasstree is an iconic Australian plant. All grasstrees we look after are propagated from seed and grown on. The propagation process is slow and requires a long period of time of intensive nursery care.

All the grasstrees produced by Ashview Acres are grown from seed. This not only is a benefit for conservation of native grasstrees but also a benefit to the purchaser. Pot grown grasstrees have reduced transplant issues often associated with reclaimed grasstrees.

  • A hero in your garden...

Grasstrees are a perfect feature tree.

Once established in the ground an attractive feature of the grasstree is that it is most likely to multi-head. Once it throws its first spear the head will split and most grasstrees will end up with 3 or 4 heads overtime.

Each head will also throw a spear and the spears on these grasstrees are 3 metres high. As a rule, the grasstree flowers every second year. It is wonderful to see one of these grasstrees with 3 or 4 spears in full flower, and it certainly gets the birds excited.

  • The secrets to caring for your grasstrees...

It is recommended that you allow at least a 2 to 3 metres diameter space around your grasstree when planting in your garden.

Grasstrees must have good drainage. They will need to be well watered for the first few months after planting.

The Grasstree responds well to a small amount of Seasol solution in the growing months of September to March. Half day to a full day of sun is required for your grasstrees to thrive.
